The land Down Undah; where dingos eat your babies and Paul Hogan has a REAL knife. The birthplace of Uggs, Men at Work and Vegemite. I've always wanted to go for the longest time. Daddy Dover has of course traveled there and he has told me so many great stories of Oz. He met great people who took him in and showed him incredible hospitality. I have to say that over 50 years later, I can say that hasn't changed.
The sheer distance from NYC to Australia is very daunting, to think that you will be flying for about 24 hours is almost unimaginable. What would I do with myself in a metal tube for that long?
Well on Christmas Day, I found out. I boarded my flight to Los Angeles, where I would meet my flight to Melbourne. I purposely booked a flight with a sizable delay. I know myself, I'd want to stretch and walk around a bit and also eat a meal because we know Domestic flights don't feed you.
Anyway, I flew on Qantas... because Australia! I wanted to be as authentic as possible (duh). It was my first time on a double decker flight and it is a DIFFERENT kind of animal. The seats were super comfy and I got a "welcome drink", THEN they passed out the menu for the course of the flight: so you know they got me! My flight was smooth af. It didn't even feel like we were in the air. FYI: This post is NOT sponsored by Qantas but I just needed to say, they did right by me.
Anyhoo, after sleeping seven hours and having ANOTHER seven to go; I had no choice but to watch all the movies ever made:
AUSTRALIA!
Melbourne was life! The food culture was on point, especially with it's heavy Asian influences. I stayed with one of the original Squares, my girl Jess. Having a local on the ground made my trip so much better. She wanted to show me her country and all it had to offer. Sydney was so emotionally moving for me. That's when it really hit. I was there.
Oz is huge so we couldn't do it all but what I did see, has definitely changed me. I can't possibly describe it all in one post; I'm not that eloquent or clever. This trip will reverberate throughout my life so you'll see glimpses of it throughout this blog. But here's a taste of the Land Down Undah
